Arora Valley answered:
Folic acid should be taken before and during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. This vitamin is especially important in reducing the risk of having a baby born with a spinal cord problem such as spina bifida. There is evidence that the vitamin also reduces the risk of having a baby born with a cleft lip and palate, congenital heart disease, and the risk of a premature labour. Birth defects occur within the first 3-4 weeks of pregnancy. Ideally, start taking Folic acid least one month before you get pregnant, and continue taking them until at least the end of the 12th week of pregnancy - even if you are healthy and have a good diet. It is always advised to consult your doctor before starting to take any supplement. Keep up your folate status by eating foods such as spinach, sprouts, broccoli, green beans, citrus fruits and fruit juices and potatoes. Some bread and breakfast cereals are also fortified with folic acid.

Claudine_Tan answered:
You should start taking at least 400mcg of folic acid when you are trying to get pregnant and continue until at least 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you did not take any folic acid before you conceived, you should do so as soon as possible. Some women have an increased risk of having a pregnancy affected by a neural tube defect and would need to consume a higher dose of folic acid (5mg) daily.

Joanneklx answered:
I have friends that eat the folic acid even before getting pregnant. However, those who do not know about folic acid will only eat when the gyane told them to do so. I asked my gyane and he said that there is no harm in eating it before getting pregnant so why not.

Janice answered:
ideally you should take folic acid before you plan to concieve. It is one of the most important vitamins/supplements that you should take as it helps tissues grow and cells work. Taking the right amount of folic acid before and during pregnancy helps prevent certain birth defects, including spina bifida. Folate also helps prevent anemia.
